Kedric and Liadranne have spent nearly a year tracking down Charlotte Xilurane's mysterious Benefactor. With little progress to show, the pair are soon caught up in the aftermath of an assassination attempt on Kerrin's ruling family and thrown back into the fray of an ongoing conflict between wizards and those who seek to replace them as the rulers of Senture. 
 
Returning to the Collegia Magica, and with the help of friends new and old, Kedric has to determine what is fact and what is misdiraction as the Benefactor makes moves to destabilize the generational relations between the wizards and the king. As Kedric faces the consequences of his past, battles to control the destructive powers within him, navigates his new duties as a professor and council member, and learns to be a parent to Raina, Kedric must rely on Liadranne to ground him and keep him safe from himself. 
 
And in the midst of it all, the mysterious Benefactor lurks in the shadows, dogging every step Kedric takes.
